Age Concern Stockport is a local registered charity and all our efforts and resources are used for the benefit of people within the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport. The organisation is a fully independent charity (Charity Number 516912), and in addition we are full members of the national Age Concern federation.

Age Concern Stockport provides a wide range of services and activities in order to deliver on our mission. In line with the organisation’s constitution all these services are designed to benefit people over the age of fifty living in Stockport. Through an ongoing planning and review process the new visions and mission are linked through the values, aims and objectives to all of our work.

Haiti earthquake

Age Concern Stockport has links with new charity Age UK (the new name for Age Concern England and Help the Aged). Age UK supports international development work in more than 40 countries around the world through its partnership with HelpAge International. One of the countries in which we work is Haiti, the small, impoverished nation in the Caribbean which has been devastated by a major earthquake.

DEC appeal

We are a member of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC). The DEC is a coalition of the UK's 13 leading humanitarian agencies. It launches and co-ordinates national fundraising appeals for public donations on behalf of its member agencies. Together, we are launching an appeal for funds to help the estimated three million people who have been affected by the recent earthquake. For further information, please see http://www.helptheaged.org.uk/en-gb/Campaigns/News/Haiti_quake_appeal_jan10.htm or http://www.ageconcern.org.uk/AgeConcern/haiti-appeal-jan10.asp or www.helpage.org

What can you do?

Donate to the Haiti appeal through https://www.donate.bt.com/dec_form_haiti.html?p_form_id=HTA01 or 020 7239 1983 or 0370 60 60 900 or go to any major bank or Post Office to make a donation to the DEC

Peer Support

As Peer Support Facilitator my role is to help people with dementia and their carers support each other. This support can come in shape of group activities or can be putting people in similar situations together. Not everyone wants group activities so we can put people in touch with each other through telephone contact, some people face to face or it may be contact through email. To sum up my role is to find practical solutions to enable peoples to support each other.

IMPORTANT NEWS Age UK Launch Statement

Statement from Age Concern Stockport Monday 19th April 2010 sees the formal launch of Age UK – the new national charity combining Age Concern England and Help the Aged. Age Concern Stockport will continue as an independent charity working with and for older people in Stockport. However we benefit from a close relationship with Age UK and we are currently discussing with them their offer to us of a brand partnership. That is sharing the name and quality standards whilst remaining local and independent. We may decide to change our name to Age UK Stockport over the next few months. However if we do we will remain a local and independent charity providing many great services and working together in many positive partnerships locally. The Trustees of Age Concern Stockport will consider all the details and implications of the brand partnership offer. They have already consulted with staff and other internal stakeholders and will be consulting with members at 12 noon on 1st June at the Pop In. Any external stakeholders are also welcome to attend this meeting (booking required). If we decide to enter into a new brand partnership with Age UK it will be because we think that, whilst remaining independent, our future and all importantly that of older people in Stockport will benefit by also having these strong national links. Any questions or for booking to the June meeting please contact Margaret Brade directly Tel: 0161 480 1211 Email: bradem@ageconcernstockport.org.uk
